There is still plenty to say

Tue, 27th Feb 2007

There is still plenty to say about Sunday's incident-packed match in Cardiff.

Players and coached have been sharing their words.

Petr Cech
'I was really pleased with my performance. There were a lot of crosses to deal with and two chances. I really enjoyed this game, I was looking forward to it for a long time because of my injury.

'We went 1-0 down quite early but we knew how to turn things round. We equalised quite quickly and in the second-half, we played tactically well.'

On the John Terry incident
'For five minutes he was on the stretcher so I didn't feel really well and it reminded me of my injury. With head injuries you never know. Fortunately there were physios around really quickly.

'When you see the reaction of everyone around and all the physios running, you could see it was not an easy injury.

'I just tried to switch off from it all. As a goalkeeper you need to keep your concentration and I was walking around, thinking about my game. I didn't even ask what was happening because it was better that way.

'There are a lot emotions because I knew if it was the same case as mine, how difficult it is to come back and how much you have to do. But already he had back consciousness when he was about the enter the tunnel and when you see him moving, after you feel fine.

'The game went on again and it was a great cup tie.

'I told him if you have some trophy for the iron man of the year, it is him because after the injury in the Porto, he played, and this is the same, he is fine!'

Wayne Bridge
'We worked hard as a team. Some people may not give us credit for beating a young team but they are a young team with quality.'

Didier Drogba (speaking on Chelsea TV's Live from Stamford Bridge)
On the first goal
'I didn't turn to see the linesman because for me I was onside. I was waiting to pass the ball to Sheva but there was no space so I decided to take my chance.'

On the second goal
'I just ran past the defender and anticipated the cross like against Bayern Munich. When the cross is coming as fast as it came, it is easy for me to choose where I want to put the ball. When Robbie crossed, I knew I was going to score.'

On the John Terry incident
'We were all shocked because of what happened earlier in the season to Petr and Carlo, especially me because I lost my assistant manager in the national team a bit in the same way on the pitch. He had a heart attack.

'So when I saw those images, I was scared. So then I had 10 to 15 minutes when I didn't know where I was, I was shocked, so it was difficult for me to keep playing.

'We tried to give more and to win. I don't think we needed this to win the game but that happened and we are very happy because now JT is in good health and we bless God because it was scary.
'Petr was praying, that shows you how terrible it was.

'When we saw him [Terry] coming into the dressing room, we were shocked as well because he was coming from nowhere.'

On the red cards incident
'Five minutes after the game, all the players of both teams were talking about that and trying to cool it down because we did not show something very good for the people in the stadium and the kids who dream about Kolo Touré or Obi Mikel.

'Kolo Touré is a winner. I know him very well and he was upset because they conceded the second goal and there were only three minutes to go. So I can understand that.

'But I think they went too far. There is a limit. I know him very well so it is a shame.'

Arjen Robben
'You want to start games like this and that disappointment, you have to put into positive energy and try to influence the game when you come in. I think I did quite well.

'Our character has been our strength and we showed it again. Personally, I want to pay Arsenal a big complement because they have done very well in my eyes with so many young players. They are all developing and that is good to see for football fans in general.'

On the Terry incident
'It was very difficult because at that time it is about someone's health and not just a broken ankle or something like that. He was away and his eyes had gone wide and it is horrible to see.

'You don't think about football anymore, you just think about everybody is human and you don't want that to happen to anybody. So I am very happy because he is doing very well.

'This Cup is totally for JT.'

Frank Lampard
'It feels nice to lift the trophy, John's done it before, but for me that's not what's important. What's important is all the lads being up there together and we have won the game.

'We have been playing well for the last month and we are still in everything. We have never won the FA Cup as a group, we haven't won the Champions League and we want to win the League again. So we can't classify anything as the big one. Everygame we play is the big one now.

'It thought my shot was going to dip in but then when it hit the bar I was gutted. But I thought it was a good sign because things like that lift the crowd.

'Typical JT, trying to stick his head in to score a goal to win it for us!'

On the red cards incident
'It stemmed from players wanting to win games and backing up your team-mates. Things happen like that and they escalate and now you sit down and say you wish they didn't happen but people want to see a final where two teams wanted to win and that's what happened.

'It was a surprise to see the manager there. I didn't know he was that quick!'

Arsène Wenger
'The regrets we have are that we didn't put the game beyond Chelsea in the first-half. We missed the final ball a few times.

'In the second-half I felt it would be the first team to score that won the game and Drogba made the difference. We lost the possession in the final third and got punished.

'Diaby got an ankle injury when he unfortunately kicked the head of Terry.'

José Mourinho
'In the first-half, playing with a midfield diamond, it was quite difficult for my players to get close.

'Fabregas, Denilson, Diaby, they were playing between our positions. In the second-half we focused three midfielders against three midfielders and Essien on Baptista because he was with a lot of freedom between the lines.

'We pressed them better. We had better control of the game and we had no defensive problems. When we scored the goal, the game was almost over. Sheva could score the third and kill it, he didn't and the game was still alive.

'That emotional situation happened and after that, the game is over. Ten against nine, it is just the final whistle to finish.'

Terry injury fears allayed

Terry injury fears allayed

Chelsea had positive news regarding John Terry after their skipper left hospital and returned to The Millennium Stadium following his injury in the Carling Cup final.

The Blues defender was rushed to hospital following a sickening head injury in the second half of Chelsea's 2-1 win, but any fears of a serious problem have now been allayed.

Terry was allowed to return to the scene of his side's victory after his absence meant Frank Lampard was called upon to lift the Carling Cup.

The England skipper sustained the injury when Abou Diaby attempted to clear from a corner and only succeeded in booting Terry full in the face.

During a lengthy delay in play -with the Blues skipper lying unconscious on the pitch - medical staff from both sides treated Terry as a number of players voiced obvious concern at his condition.

However, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has now signalled his relief at the news of his leader's return after admitting the incident evoked memories of Petr Cech's horror injury earlier in the season.

"Sometimes in football, dramatic things happen," said Mourinho.

"This season we have already had the situations with Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini and the negative thoughts come directly to your mind.

"The first point is 'Is he safe? Is the man fine?'. John's wife, his little babies are here, so the most important thing is that the man is safe.

"John risked himself and the Arsenal player was trying to protect his goal. I have no criticism about that.

"There was concern when the situation happened but after that the information was coming in that he was conscious again and everything is fine."

Match-winner Didier Drogba - who scored twice following Theo Walcott's opener for Arsenal - spoke after the final whistle of his distress at Terry's injury.

"Today is strange," said Drogba. "We won and we're happy because we've got the cup but we are also scared because we didn't know what to expect when we saw JT on the floor.

"I think more about JT than the cup. It is difficult because he was one metre away from me (when it happened).

"We saw his character and this is why he is our captain and why he is the best."

Blues prevail

Blues prevail as red mist descends

Didier Drogba's double was enough for Chelsea to see off Arsenal's young Guns as they defeated their rivals 2-1 in a Carling Cup final that was marred by three late red cards and a nasty injury to John Terry.

The first all-London showdown in League Cup final history will certainly live long in the memory after a dramatic afternoon that saw Arsene Wenger's youngsters dismiss any fears of stage fright when Theo Walcott rose to the occasion by scoring his first goal for the club after 12 minutes.

However Chelsea's superstars drew level when Drogba stroked the ball home, although the decision to give the striker onside may have angered Wenger as he aimed to orchestrate his first victory over Jose Mourinho.

What was a beguiling final - pitting two contrasting squad building philosophies against each other - took a worrying turn when Terry's return to fitness was cut short as he was taken to hospital following a sickening head injury.

Losing their skipper only seemed to galvanise The Blues - who hit the woodwork through Frank Lampard and Andrei Shevchenko - and it was Drogba yet again who proved to be the match-winner as he handed Mourinho his fourth major trophy in English football.

There was no love lost between the two sides before kick-off and tempers duly boiled over in injury-time as John Obi Mikel, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor earned red cards following an unseemly brawl.

In the opening stages The Gunners showed that whilst they may have been lacking in experience, there was no reason to doubt their temperament as they dominated play with their snappy passing and fluid movement.

Cesc Fabregas, at 19 the senior figure in Arsenal's midfield, saw a 25-yard effort comfortably saved by Petr Cech, whilst Jeremie Aliadiere was only inches away from connecting with Julio Baptista's pull-back.

The Brazilian forward had scored six goals in the previous rounds - including four against Liverpool at Anfield - and but for a superb diving save from Cech he would have made it a magnificent seven with a fierce rising drive.

However, The Gunners did manage to capitalise on their confident start and after 12 minutes, Walcott came of age with his first ever goal for the North Londoners.

The 17-year-old prodigy started the move with a square pass to Abou Diaby, continued his run into the box, and received the ball back before picking out the far corner of Cech's net with a measured finish.

It was a wonderful moment for the player who had seen his contribution questioned in recent weeks, and Arsenal thought they should have had the chance to claim a second soon after when Baptista appealed in vain for a penalty after tangling with Lassana Diarra in the box.

Chelsea's superstars had been put firmly in the shade by their young opponents, but The Blues demonstrated the resilience that has served them so well under Mourinho by clawing back an equaliser on 20 minutes.

Drogba looked to be marginally offside when being played in by Michael Ballack's ball over the top, but the Ivorian did not hang around to find out and finished neatly through the legs of Manuel Almunia for his 27th of a superb season.

However, Arsenal responded and their pace continued to trouble the Premiership champions. Armand Traore was a dynamic influence at left-back, and after Cech fumbled his cross the angle was too tight for Aliadiere to convert.

In a captivating first half, Chelsea also upped their input and Shevchenko should have done a lot better when he produced a weak header from Wayne Bridge's cross.

It had been a strangely lacklustre performance from Chelsea and Mourinho responded by introducing Dutch winger Arjen Robben in place of holding midfielder Claude Makelele.

Three minutes after the restart Chelsea were again thanking Cech after he pulled off a good save to deny Diaby, who had been played in by Baptista after a quick free-kick from The Gunners.

Wenger's charges continued to impress with Fabregas fizzing a shot inches wide after avoiding the close attentions of Ballack, but Baptista could only find the wall after Ricardo Carvalho was booked for a foul on Aliadiere.

Diarra also earned a caution for a cynical foul on Diaby, and the young Frenchman could have considered himself somewhat lucky to be on the pitch after avoiding a card for a similar challenge in the first half.

The introduction of Robben had given The Blues a much-needed extra dimension and the Dutchman began to cause Traore problems at left-back. After skipping past the teenager for a second time Robben curled a subsequent effort high and wide.

Terry's afternoon was then curtailed when the England skipper suffered an apparently serious injury when Diaby's foot connected with his face in sickening fashion. The Arsenal man was attempting to clear from a corner and Terry was stretchered off in a neck brace following a lengthy delay in proceedings.

The severity of the injury was displayed by the immediate concern shown by both sets o of players, and Mourinho replaced his skipper with Mikel as Arsenal also rung the changes with Alexander Hleb and Emmanuel Eboue on for Diaby and Traore.

When the focus returned to footballing matters, the North Londoners were thankful for a fine save from Almunia as he got down quickly to save from Drogba.

The Spaniard was left with no chance on 74 minutes when Frank Lampard unleashed a thunderous long-rage effort, but luckily for Arsenal the ball rattled the woodwork and bounced to safety.

However Wenger's men could not stem the tide and, after Denilson gave the ball away with a sloppy pass, Drogba won his personal duel with Philippe Senderos again when he got in front of his marker to produce a superb header from Robben's cross for a 2-1 lead.

Shevchenko almost sealed the victory when he slammed a shot against the woodwork, and as the game entered injury-time the match exploded when Mikel and Toure instigated a shoving match that resulted in both managers taking the field to calm their players down.

As the dust settled, both players were dismissed along with Adebayor, and Fabregas and Lampard were lucky to get away with bookings as they became tangled.

It was an explosive conclusion to a breathless game, and as the clock ticked past 101 minutes, referee Howard Webb finally blew his whistle to confirm that Chelsea were the victors in the Carling Cup.

Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal: Drogba double stuns Gunners

Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal: Drogba double stuns Gunners

Three players were sent off as Chelsea came from behind to win the Carling Cup for the second time in three years with a 2-1 win over Arsenal - but skipper John Terry was not around to lift the trophy after being taken to hospital following a sickening kick in the head.

Chelsea's Didier Drogba scores the winning goal in the Carling Cup final.

In front of watching England boss Steve McClaren, Terry was knocked out cold as he took the full force of Abou Diaby's boot in the face as the pair challenged for a loose ball in the Arsenal box just before the hour mark.Terry swallowed his tongue during the drama, which left Diaby in tears, before he was eventually carried off on a stretcher with an oxygen mask helping his breathing.Although he was revived before leaving the Millennium Stadium, Terry will now undergo extensive tests before being allowed to play again. • Drogba: We won it for JT The injury overshadowed an amazing game, in which Didier Drogba plundered his 27th and 28th goals of the season after Theo Walcott had put Arsenal ahead, but ended in the sourest manner imaginable with a mass brawl which Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger tried to break up.Mikel Jon Obi and Kolo Toure reacted to their punishment by simply removing their shirts. Emmanuel Adebayor was less gracious and had to be hauled off as he continued to vent his fury at referee Howard Webb. With Frank Lampard and Cesc Fabregas also booked, the Football Association are sure to launch an investigation at some point in the next 48 hours.Certainly, there was no shortage of incident for sponsors Carling to bother about. And any suggestion Wenger devalued their competition by fielding his youngsters can be rejected too.In fact, to see Arsenal's kids buzzing around the Millennium Stadium with no sign of big-match nerves was a total joy.In Abou Diaby and Fabregas, the Gunners boast a pair of fresh-faced midfielders capable of carrying them to glory for the next decade and their speed and movement was initially too much for a Chelsea outfit, whose experience was about the only thing that kept them in the game. The other major gripe at Wenger is his failure to develop Englishmen.Having lured Walcott from Southampton for #12million, no-one could argue the Arsenal academy was actually responsible for bringing through the 17-year-old.But, when he told Sven-Goran Eriksson to take a gamble on the teenager at last summer's World Cup, Wenger clearly knew what he was talking about.Eriksson's refusal to call on Walcott as England slithered out of Germany has left a stain on the player's career that will be difficult to remove. But the task has begun now after he chose the perfect setting to score his first Arsenal goal.He did all the hard work himself too, shuttling back to pick up the loose ball after Chelsea had half-cleared a corner. Walcott then continued his run after laying off a pass to Diaby, collected the return and skipped past an otherwise immaculate Ricardo Carvalho before delivering a precise finish.Rarely since Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge have Chelsea been subjected to such torture. But what they lack in flair, the Blues make up for in efficiency.Drogba should have been flagged offside when he collected Michael Ballack's astute chipped pass. But once he had gained the benefit of the decision, the striker never looked likely to fail and assuredly smashed home his 28th goal of an incredible season.Drogba's efforts should have given Chelsea the platform to assert their authority. Instead, the plucky Arsenal lads refused to buckle and contributed fully to a sustained period of committed cut and thrust, which came to an abrupt end with Terry's sickening injury. For five minutes, the Chelsea medical staff attended to their captain, whose bravery was exemplified by his willingness to play in Cardiff despite suffering a serious ankle injury in Porto on Wednesday.Arsenal and England physio Gary Lewin was also on the scene.Understandably, the game lost its spark for a while afterwards. It took Frank Lampard's thunderous 25-yard strike to bring it back to life, the England midfielder shaking the crossbar with Manuel Almunia beaten. With young legs starting to tire, from then on it seemed just a matter of when, not if, Chelsea would get their winner. And, when Arjen Robben drifted over a cross from the left, there was little surprise either that Drogba should be the man who muscled his way in front of Philippe Senderos and glanced the decisive header into the bottom corner.Arsenal had seven minutes' worth of injury time to try to fashion an equaliser.Instead, all a capacity crowd got was a ugly 14-man brawl, which brought both managers onto the pitch and left referee Howard Webb in an unenviable position, which he eventually resolved by brandishing three red cards. Drogba: We won it for JTChelsea hero Didier Drogba admitted he had mixed emotions after an incident-packed Carling Cup final in which his goals secured a 2-1 win over Arsenal, skipper John Terry was taken to hospital with a head injury and three players were sent off.

Frank Lampard fights with Cesc Fabregas as emotions run high in the Carling Cup final.

Drogba cancelled out Theo Walcott's opener for the Gunners and, after the Blues lost Terry to an accidental kick on the head from Abou Diaby, he headed home Arjen Robben's cross to claim the first trophy of the season. The drama did not end there with referee Howard Webb dismissing Chelsea's Mikel Jon Obi and Arsenal's Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor following an injury-time brawl. 'Today is strange,' Drogba told Sky Sports. 'We won and we're happy because we've got the cup but we are also scared because we don't know what to expect when we saw JT on the floor. 'I think more about JT than the cup. 'It is difficult because he was one metre away from me (when it happened). 'We saw his character and this is why he is our captain and why he is the best.' Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech suffered a fractured skull earlier this season at Reading. But he said of Terry's injury: 'I think it's one of the worst moments I have experienced on the pitch because I can't remember my injury! 'But you saw the reaction of the players. For the first three or four minutes after the injury, I had other emotions. 'I hope he will be all right. I hope it's the last injury he has.' There was still over half an hour to play after Terry went off. Cech said: 'There were still a lot of minutes to play. It's always a big blow when you see an injury like this, but we wanted to win the cup.' Now the Blues will turn their attention to retaining their Premiership title, while they remain in contention for the FA Cup and Champions League. On the prospect of a clean sweep, Cech said: 'I hope so. There are another three competitions we are involved in - we will try to do our best.' Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho paid tribute to Arsenal's young players. 'They played a very good game in my opinion,' he told Sky Sports. 'They beat Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham with this team. 'In the second half it was completely different, we dominated the game and at the end of the day we deserved the victory.' Three red cards marred the end of the match, and he added: 'The pity was what happened in the final (minutes). I don't know what happened but it was not nice. 'A special word for them - they played very good. 'They are a great coach, great players - but football is about winning and the cup goes to us.' Chelsea vice-captain Frank Lampard, who lifted the trophy in the absence of Terry, said: 'As soon as JT went down I could see it in his face (that it was serious). 'That (winning the cup) was for John going off like that.' Asked if the players would get the trophy to Terry in hospital as soon as possible, Lampard replied: 'If it's possible, of course we will because we are a team.' Lampard admitted that it had been a disappointing end to the final when both sets of players became embroiled in an unseemly brawl sparked by a challenge from Mikel on Toure. 'I wasn't involved in the first incident but then some of their players got upset. I came in trying to sort it out and then got involved in it. 'It's disappointing for a final but it just shows how much people want to win this cup.' Lampard admitted Arsenal had started very strongly and deserved their early lead but Chelsea weathered the storm. 'We didn't have too much of the game,' said Lampard, 'but we just needed to win the game and we have. 'Didier is the best in the world at the moment. He is doing it week-in, week-out for us.'

Just listen to Drogba

Jose's interview

What a night!

A night for the blues. The game between Chelsea and Arsenal kept me on the edge of my chair for the whole 103 minutes it was played. The only two occasions I left my chair were when Drogba scored in the 18th min and 84th min. I was left with my heart in my mouth when Walcott broke through to put Arsenal ahead. Though I was secretly wishing that Arsenal would keep the elad at least till half time. That was because I had placed a five bucks bet on Arsenal leading at half time and Chelsea snatching victory at the end of the game. I stood to make a 23 times profit. They went in level at half time in the end. I was not complaining though, because despite losing the chance to fatten my wallet, my heart clearly wants a blue victory. I had also had bets of ten bucks on Chelsea winning and five on 3 goals being scored. I had made a very accurate assessment at the beginning, feeling that Chelsea would concede first before coming from behind to clinch all the glory. My bets are nothing but punting for fun, to put a bit of money on where my heart lies. So far, I have been careful and the tiniest profits are coming in. Not a very good habit, especially not when the CAs are just two days away. It will be neuroscience all the way tomorrow and COFM on tuesday. Pharmoco is tedious, but a good work out for my brain. Then comes microb where I am treading thin water, I really need to score really high to pull my average up to an acceptable level. This is exhilirating. Getting into deep shit before waddling out of it. I guess I like doing things the hard way. Just like Chelsea.
ALl the way ! The Blues!
And before I end, during the match, John Terry received a horrible kick from the shin straight in the face. He was knocked out cold with both arms stiffed by the side. It was a chilling image on television and everything seemed unimportant compared to a person's life. What is the use of winning at Cardiff if something happens to JT. I am a captain too and given the same situation, would have stuck my neck out in the same fashion. My competition is coming up and so may I lead the team to glory too!
Still, all the way my BLUES!

One more time

It is probably not a good time to blog because I have not had a wink through the night. I had a night filled with smoke, fire, bright light and plenty of carcinogenic food. And it also a night with pandas, with fun, with connections and plenty of laughter. It was a good night. Panda outings are always filled with food, drinks and lame jokes. A bad habit that was brought back from China. No wonder pandas are fat and have black eye rings. I took a nice bath once I reached home and was really tempted to just shut myself off to the world, and abandon all consciousness. After all, I just had a night where I had abandoned all inhibitions and diet restrictions.
Then I remembered that my mum wanted me to help her this morning. New year is after all closer to tomorrow than next year. I went downstairs in search of her, maybe I could carry her shopping bags or help her lug the 1 kg of rice home. Luckily her supermarket needs today are minimal. The only instruction to me was to clean up my room and stop using my notes as carpet. Not to mention my blanket, pillow and bloster. Let everything return to where they should be.
Okay, not a problem. So I went back to my room, happily sidestepped the storybook that lies on the floor immediate to my entrance into the room, then skipped over a pillow and an old bag, evaded some scattered pieces of paper and settled down comfortably into my computer chair. Nothing seems to be a problem.
I feel extra invigorated because I had just completed four very important tasks on thursday. Not exactly completion because I still have to tie up many loose ends, but at least I took care of them well enough for me to have a few weeks of peaceful sleep. I met with the sports club representative to discuss about the funding for my Combined Martial Arts Display this year. Managed to coerce $1300 out from him. Hopefully I can use that money to increase publicity for all the martial arts clubs at the same time. Maybe I will be voted 武林盟主once everyone realised how useful my contributions are. Just a joke. It is just that I miss Louis Chia's novels too much. WHen is he coming out with a new book? Never seems to be it, even Harry Potter is being lined up for its 7th launch. I am considering placing an order with Borders after receiving an invitation through its weekly e-news. Then I still have to meet with Sports Club's Marketing director to discuss about sourcing of sponsors. At least there is the sports council with $500 already.
Then I met Melanie of UCC. The booking of UCC's theatre would be smooth albeit costly. I had even managed to bargain off $180 from the total price. I still 8 hours of time in that theatre. Why should I be doing all the leg work when I am the project director? Am I too nice a guy, considerate or just useless at allocating work? Hardly. It is nice to see through the important details after all my signature would be required and all expenses and credit will be through me. A rich and poor man at the same time, that is me.
Then I did my Judo club's workplan for this year. I realized I am just way too ambitious when too few people really take CCA seriously. Do I stand a chance of changing that? More of my time perhaps. But one thing I really want is to sweep the medals at the IVP in march.天下第一!神功盖世!唯我独尊! The lack of sleep is really getting to me.
Went to SRC and met Rahayu. Managed to coax 20 Judo mats out of her, plus competition attire and support for my Judo team members for the upcoming competition. I cannot imagine how wonderful the support are. She told me the school will actually print an NUS team tshirt, a sports jacket, provide meal and transport allowance plus pay for the competition fees for school representatives. Though she agreed to that with some hesitation, and only after my powerful skill of persuasion touched her deeply.
I cannot remember what is the fourth matter, or maybe I am just not very good at counting. I am losing control over my eyelids. And someone just sent a smile to me through friendster. WHat a nice phrase that beautiful stranger used: though this is virtual..i'm also always SMILING.. I did not bother to reply.
Shall lie down like a python, digest food from the night and prepare myself for the feast that follows my sleep.
Good Night

So guys, what did you all do on Vday? I had gift exchange in the morning and lunch at Marina Square before meeting Barry and borrowing Pharmaco notes. After which I slept through the afternoon, woke at dusk and had dinner with parents. Then went to study at Compasspoint. Then it seemed that every girl had flowers and big cuddly soft toys and she just had to meet her girlfriends to share their vday experiences. My thoughts go to a certain rejected panda member and a current panda. How I would give anything to hear what happended on Vday. Anyway I think I am fine with anywhere to go for our reunion dinner. I would leave the decision to Xueting and Qiuting. Girlpandies, please make use of this empowerment to make the correct decision. Please do not be indecisive, it is a prerogative of malepandies, make up your mind and we will follow you.

All pictures and some words

I just realised that I have not put up the photos that I took with Janine and Saya!
So I guess I shall do that right now. I am supposed to be studying. It seems nowadays that I am always supposed to be studying. Yet I am here online idling my time away. Chinese New Year is just around the corner, this Sun in fact. I went to Marina Square on 14th of Feb at 11am. Ordered a Breaded Chicken Meuniere, Calamari, two soups, Sprite, Crayfish Pasta, coke lite and two ice creams. Took notes from Barry at 2pm. Going to photocopy them in school, hopefully I can get it done by the end of the day. I wonder what would he say to me if I told him I burnt all his notes in jest.Certainly not something pleasant. Was pointed the wrong bus to take home from Punggol Park and ended up having to change another bus. Slept through my afternoon and went to CP to study at night. I realised everyone was carrying flowers today and big cuddly soft toys. I wonder what did JW give to XT. Received two sms wishing me happy Valentine's day. I wonder what is there to be happy about, if I need sms to make me happy on Valentine's day. I am listening to an Eason song right now. Finally found the right equalizer settings to make the song audible and enjoyable. This and another Jeff Chang song have been filling my days. WHat emotions can songs stir. Enough said. Here are my photos.

Samsung YP-T8Z (1GB) For $99!

As Samsung's latest flash-based MP3 player to hit the market, the YP-T8 is an eye-catching device with a noticeably large LCD display which distances it from similarly-speced players. Laden with a slew of features, the YP-T8 not only manages to avoid tripping on its varied functions, it also proved its mettle in our lab test. We heartily recommend it to users looking for a pint sized multimedia solution without the sacrifice in performance.

Design
Other than the 1.8-inch display which dominates the front of the player, the YP-T8 embraces an elliptic-like design with a gentle curvature on its front, back and sides for an overall comfortable feel reminiscent of the first time we laid hands on the Zen Micro.

The navigation key makes for a hor hum alternative.

Though the buttons have relatively good tactile feedback, the layout is all over the place. Rather like our beef with the iRiver H10 which has the Play button sitting on the right side of the device, the YP-T8 employs the same concept which dampens the intuitiveness inherent in players with playback controls located only on the front panel. The YP-T8 uses a clickable rocker switch beneath the display to scroll up and down the menu. While this may not be as convenient as the iPod's Click Wheel, the commonsensical layout of the buttons: Left arrow to enter a menu, right to backtrack, up/down to scroll, eases the learning curve a little. Though most of the functions have their own dedicated buttons, the menu key can be dual-activated--press and hold to exit to the main menu, a short press to access the contextual sub-menu for the feature e.g. preset controls and manual tuning while in FM radio mode. The same also goes for the rocker switch.

Now that is so much cleaner.

Oddly, the microphone is located on the bottom of the YP-T8. It's not a major quibble for us, but if you need to check the length of the voice file while recording, it helps if you can read upside down.

Display is bright and colorful with ample space to display basic ID3 tag info like artist name, album, song title and bit rate. There are even three mini visualizers though two of these are not reactive to music playback; they are simply graphics put on a perpetual loop.

Though the YP-T8 comes in a very pocket-able design, a condom belt-clip casing is also included as well as a corded lanyard (looking like a length of rope) to hang off the neck. Not exactly very stylish options, we would rather whip out the YP-T8 every now and then to show it off.

The main grouse we had with the older Samsung YEPP models was that the bundled music management software was essentially a waste of time. However, the new Samsung Media Studio has been given a cosmetic overhaul and now comes in an iPod-ish white with a tinge of ash-blue. The new design is very clean and easy to navigate and a whole lot less painful than the previous renditions. It covers the basics like playlist creation, ID3 tag editing and Gracenote support amply well, though it is still not on par with iTunes.

The rubber condom casing makes it look like a mobile phone.

A separate Multimedia Studio covers the picture and video transfers to the YP-T8. It's odd that Samsung did not choose to integrate both together. The Multimedia Studio covers basic image editing and handles the conversion of videos into the .svi format for viewing on the YP-T8. The conversion is something we could have done without, but this is a prevalent requirement in all the flash-based MP3 players (with video playback support) we have encountered so far. The YP-T8 also fulfills the standard set of features in an average MP3 player; FM/voice/line-in recording, playlist creation, FM radio and the usual codec support (MP3, WMA, OGG and WAV). Unlike the iPod, the photo viewer function on the YP-T8 does not support thumbnails which makes searching for a specific JPEG a relative hassle. This Samsung could be improved with a screen brightness adjustment as well as a zooming function.

The rubber condom casing makes it look like a mobile phone.

In addition, this Samsung MP3 player can also act as a text reader and USB host device, but users intending to utilize the latter, must bring along the USB host cable. We tried the YP-T8 with both a Super Tangent and a thumbdrive and the Samsung recognized both without any problems. However, the transfer speed was real sluggish; we clocked 0.21MB per second on average.

A nice bonus is the motion-sensitive gaming capability. Our review unit came with four games: One Shot Dart (dart throwing), Crazy Hurdles, Hextris (a Tetris clone) and Pipe Dream Plus. The first two games require hand motions to control the characters and takes some getting used to, but once mastered, the games make for amusing fun. One word of caution, fellow commuters on a bus may give you a wide berth after bearing witness to your violent hand movements trying to throw a virtual dart.

Video playback on the YP-T8 follows a landscape orientation and the 1.8-inch screen certainly suffices for short videos without straining the eyes. However the color display is not exceedingly brilliant and there is no zoom function or an orientation adjustment for the display.

Performance

Para para on your MP3 player.
The YP-T8 does not disappoint on the sound stakes, either. Besides a host of sound equalizer features like 3D effects (club, stage, studio, user), preset equalizers (classical, R&B, ballad, jazz, rock, house, dance) and a seven-band user defined equalizer, there is a Street mode which Samsung claims to enhance the music fidelity in a noisy environment.

On testing, we find that it is only an equalizer enhancement to achieve a brighter sound to overcome ambiant noise. We would rather vote for noise-canceling earphones anyday.

Vocals on the YP-T8 are very clear and crisp and though it is not lacking in bass, it certain is in need of equalizers to up the low end on dance tracks. We recorded transfer speeds of 6.51MB per second on average for the YP-T8, a very respectable score, and it even managed to best the manufacturer-claimed battery life of 20 hours with 21 hours and 50 minutes.
